Written by KATERYNA LAKOMOVA

Autumn dressing can be challenging. It's a season of transition, with chilly mornings turning into warm afternoons. One minute you're freezing, and the next, you're sweating. It's tempting to jump from summer shorts to winter coats or, even worse, to wear them together.

But fear not—creating fall outfits for men is simpler than you might think. Firstly, check the weather report every morning. Secondly, be prepared to layer up. Lots of layers are key.

Our essential list of men's autumn outfits for the 2024 season combines must-have seasonal pieces with trendier selections. From cozy knits to versatile basics, we've got you covered.

17 Fall Wardrobe Essentials for Men

Summer may be coming to an end, but there's still plenty of excitement on the horizon. Why? It's time to update your autumn wardrobe. We've already done the hard work for you by carefully selecting a range of versatile fall essentials that every man should have in his cold-weather collection. Read further and check them out.

Coat

A coat made of premium wool or a wool blend, single-breasted or double-breasted, is a must-have for the autumn. They are designed to withstand dampness and chilly winds, so consider your specific needs before making a choice. We recommend the Single-breasted checked coat Eliias by Tiger of Sweden. This versatile coat, crafted from a high-quality cotton-wool blend, will complement any of your smart fall outfits.

Overshirt

It's important to stay flexible with your clothing choices during the fall season, and an overshirt can provide the perfect layering option when a blazer is too warm. An overshirt is a relaxed, long-sleeved shirt jacket typically crafted from heavier materials like denim, corduroy, or thick cotton, such as the Check-pattern overshirt Joseph. These shirts are meant to be worn unbuttoned over another garment, such as a T-shirt or a lightweight knit, making them well-suited for layering during colder temperatures.

Leather Jacket

The leather jacket has a timeless appeal that even those with a casual interest in fashion can appreciate. These fashion staples have a fascinating history, once worn as flight jackets and later seen on the silver screen, giving style icons an added edge. During the fall, the jacket's water-resistant exterior effortlessly pairs both with a simple white T-shirt and with a chunky knit. As the weather cools, layer it with a hoodie or pullover, or even swap out your suit jacket for more elevated work attire. Our collection features a modern take on the Leather bomber jacket, seamlessly blending bold style with classic design.

Fall Jacket

A good fall jacket should combine function with style, keeping you dry without making you look like a lost tourist. Look for jackets that are 100% waterproof (not just water-resistant or showerproof), have plenty of pockets, taped seams, and are also aesthetically pleasing. Unless you plan a mountain trek, you don't need to worry about anything too technical. We recommend the Patch-pocket jacket Jacques by Moose Knuckles, as these guys create autumn wear that can withstand Canadian weather and look extremely cool.

Casual Blazer

In recent years, traditional blazers have become less common, and the definition of the term has expanded to describe any casually tailored jacket with lapels, vents, and a two- or three-button front. In this sense, a casual blazer is a jacket that maintains most of these tailored elements but has certain features that make it less formal, like an unstructured shape and a relaxed drape. The perfect example? Pieces from Tiger of Sweden, such as the Casual wool-blend blazer Justin HL.

Turtleneck

There's nothing quite like a high-quality knit to keep you warm. While bringing out the heavy-duty sweaters may still be a bit early, sticking to lighter-gauge knitwear until winter really kicks in is a good idea. Turtlenecks made from temperature-regulating merino wool, breathable cotton blends, and irresistibly soft cashmere are all great options to consider. When making an investment, it's best to prioritize versatile colors like navy, grey, brown, or beige, as they will complement everything in your wardrobe. If you already have the neutral basics covered, think about adding a more seasonal piece in burgundy, bottle green, or burnt orange to give your cold-weather outfits a timely upgrade. The Rollneck cashmere pullover is a fabulous men's fall fashion staple, but if you're looking for more variety, take a look at the whole FTC Cashmere collection.

Polo Shirts

When transitioning from summer to autumn, don't overlook the versatility of the classic knit polo. With its mod-inspired '60s charm, this timeless piece effortlessly complements any fall wardrobe. For early autumn, consider adding a short-sleeved version, like Les Deux's Pique polo shirt. As the weather turns cooler, opt for a long-sleeved piece such as the Long Sleeve Merino Polo Shirt by Johnstons of Elgin.

Sweater

Include a couple of reliable sweaters in your fall wardrobe. Whether it's wool, alpaca, cashmere, or a mix of these materials, choose the one that best suits your style and skin. The Crewneck sweater Phingo from Holzweiler is a perfect example of a timeless and stylish piece that will complement your fall outfits.

Cardigan

When we talk about autumn, we're really talking about layering, and that means having a cardigan on hand. It's like your favorite crew neck, but with the convenience of a zipper or row of buttons. A chunky knit cardigan Nyman is our top pick because of its stylish ribbed knit in a deep brown color and its ability to be easily layered with its two-sided zipper.

Button-Down Shirt

Don't forget to layer something formal underneath your blazer. A button-down is a great option; after all, not everything you wear needs to be super warm. If you need extra warmth, you can always add a coat or a leather jacket to your look. We recommend styling the Checked Cotton Shirt Kent by Les Deux with your fall wardrobe.

White T-Shirt

A must-have for any season. Once you add this piece to your core wardrobe, you won't regret it. The Merserized relaxed-fit t-shirt Logra is the perfect choice to coordinate with any outfit.

Fleece Hoodie

Fleece hoodies provide exceptional comfort and excellent protection from the elements. They can also be easily layered over a shirt or tee and worn under a jacket or blazer for a stylish, contrasting look. If you're looking for a versatile piece, opt for neutral colors and a simple design, just like the Oversize fleece hoodie Tilde.

Trousers

While people often consider the color and cut of their pants, the type of fabric is also crucial for keeping warm in the autumn. Even though some cotton pants can handle the cold, wool pants offer the best mix of warmth and comfort. Lately, more designers have been promoting a wider leg style, which makes a bold statement but might not be everyone's cup of tea. However, if you want to go for it, the Wide-leg wool trousers by Holzweiler are an excellent choice for your casual fall outfits.

Beanie Hat

We all have our fair share of bad hair days, especially when there's more rain and storms than usual. It's best to cover it up and wear one of these cozy, thick-knit beanies, like the Wool blend ribbed hat.

Sneakers

Swapping out sleek white sneakers and stain-prone suedes for something more practical makes sense. Trainer styles in dark, muted leathers offer the same casual look and superior comfort without needing to avoid every pile of leaves. Using a hydrophobic shoe protector is also a good idea. Take a look at Voile Blanche's sneaker collection; they offer many options for transitioning weather, like the Fur-lined nubuck sneakers Arpolh.

Leather Shoes

What do we mean by "casual leather shoes"? Consider Hereu's  Slip-on loafers Nombela from the new collection as a perfect example. These shoes go well with loose-legged denim and polished tailoring; honestly, they can be effortlessly combined with any autumn clothes for men.

Boots

When the weather turns wet and chilly, it's time to reconsider your footwear. Instead of flimsy shoes, opt for durable hiking boots, Derby or Chelsea, that can handle the rain and snow. These boots offer more coverage and are incredibly versatile. Pair them with smart trousers or a suit for formal events, or go for a more casual look with comfy jeans. Choose sturdy leather in classic colors like black, tan, or brown for easy maintenance. Look for styles with a rubber or leather sole for extra durability and better grip in bad weather. This way, you won't have to buy another pair of boots next year. Check out the Fracap collection; their Ripple-sole leather boots Roc are perfect for combining with your fall looks.

Autumn Fashion Tips for Men

The fashion industry often talks about the "autumn transition" as a sort of mid-life crisis. But essentially, the fundamental rule for dressing in these changing months is to wear clothes, preferably made of breathable, natural fabrics, that can be easily layered on and, if necessary, taken off when you go indoors. Adaptability is crucial during this time. Here are some key points to keep in mind if you want to nail your fall wardrobe.

Weight of the Garment

The most important thing to consider is the weight of your fall items. They won't do the job properly if they are too light or heavy. The key is to layer middle-weight pieces—some heavier and some lighter than usual—to achieve a balance of warmth and waterproofing. It's about creating the perfect package, neither too hot nor too cold.

Think of each clothing piece as serving a specific purpose. For instance, during the depths of winter, you'd wear a coat that provides insulation and protection from wind and rain. In autumn, however, you just need something to keep the rain off, like a lightweight shell jacket, a baseball cap, or a folding umbrella. In summer, a shirt may be worn for its stylishness, but in autumn, it should contribute to your core layers. Choose a heavier fabric, like flannel, wool, or thick cotton. Underneath the shirt, swap a T-shirt for a long-sleeved top or a lighter-weight sweatshirt.

Material

Fall is a great time for leather outerwear, like edgy aviators and motorcycle jackets, as it's too hot for summer and not ideal for consistently wet winter weather. Technical fabrics used in making specialized and multifunctional clothing are also perfect for this season. These materials, like advanced textiles, can create jackets that are both warm and cool, light and substantial, catering to your body's needs. Although they can be pricey, many designers work with traditional outdoor brands to avoid the Everest-climber look. Waxed cotton is another option that's been around for a while, offering water repellency. More sophisticatedly coated cotton, coated with materials like rubber, has become more mainstream. Even polyester fleece, once specialized, is now used by many brands without the mountain rescue connotation, making it great for a middle layer.

Layering

There are numerous ways to combine the pieces mentioned above. For a casual look, consider wearing a short jacket over a crew-neck sweater and T-shirt. This combination will serve you well during most autumn days and is a style that every man should be able to pull off effortlessly. If you want to dress slightly more smart or business casual, try wearing a trench coat over an unlined sports jacket and a button-down shirt. Regardless of whether you are dressing up or down, it's important to remember that layering is crucial, especially for your upper body. It's best to avoid layering your trousers, but you may want to consider wearing heavier-weight legwear such as wool, twill, or raw denim.

If you're new to layering, start with a three-layer system consisting of a base, mid, and top layer. The warmest clothing you own should be worn next to your skin. Cotton is a reliable option for wicking away sweat, but a merino wool base layer is the most effective way to stay warm. It gives you flexibility with the rest of your outfit and is even more effective when combined with multiple thin layers on top. Consider adding a shirt or long-sleeved T-shirt as your mid-layer, a fine-gauge sweater, fitted cardigan, or loopback cotton sweatshirt as your top layer, and finish with something softly tailored like an unstructured blazer for a smarter appearance or a lightweight jacket for weatherproofing.

Pay attention to each layer you add, because once you're indoors, any of them could become the focal point of your outfit. You should also make sure not to add so many layers that your mobility is restricted or so few that you rely solely on your outerwear for warmth.

Footwear

Layering can work wonders for your outfit, but your footwear also should not be overlooked when the weather gets rough. Unlined sneakers are only suitable for drier months; they won't hold up in tougher weather. Instead, opt for more durable options like welted shoes that can be resoled multiple times, or even better, go for boots to keep your feet dry and warm. Workwear boots are great for a casual look, while Chelsea or leather desert boots offer a smarter alternative and can be paired with almost anything in your wardrobe.

Color Blocking

Even though it's autumn, you don't have to feel obligated to start dressing in colors that match the outdoor scenery. Fashion advice often insists on wearing fall colors: brown, dark green, ochre, reddish, and "burnt" tones, as if you secretly wanted to blend in with a pile of dead leaves. Yet we suggest wearing whatever colors make you happy—let's bring some excitement with fall outfit ideas for men to combat the impending dullness.
