The Best Trench Coat Outfit Ideas for Any Weather

We hail the trench coat as a timeless and versatile wardrobe staple that everyone should own. We all know what a trench coat is, right? Renowned for its practicality and enduring style, it blends fashion with function and is essential for transitional weather. And that’s exactly why wearing the same coat sometimes feels a bit monotonous—it fits everything, and you reach for it by default. But no worries! With the right mindset and clever styling tips, we’ll breathe new life into this classic piece.

We’ve compiled a list of the best pairings—with a dress, jeans, or a suit, almost anything in your closet can complement your trench coat beautifully. Plus, with a variety of materials, finishes, and colors available, your trench can stand out on its own.

So, are trench coats in style? Since their inception in the mid-19th century, they have consistently remained fashion-appealing. That’s why in this article, we’ve gathered our top styling tips on what to wear with a trench coat, along with our favorite trench styles, from oversized and cropped to waist-belted styles.

Trench with tailored trousers

How to style a trench coat with tailored bottoms to look stylish rather than formal? Add accessories—like a silk scarf around your neck, minimalist jewelry, a pair of edgy sunglasses. And instead of your usual heels, try loafers—they will breathe fresh air into the combo.

Our hero outer layer is the Long trenchcoat from House of Dagmar—classic color, classic cut, perfect example from a textbook. We paired it with the Wide-leg suit trousers from Beige Brown and Hereu’s Lace-up loafers for that modern take on smart casual.

Trench paired with a suit

A trench coat can also be styled for elevated, high-fashion looks. It's a perfect piece to embody a quiet luxury vibe—simply layer it over a monochromatic suit and add oversized sunglasses. This combination creates a polished and fashion-forward outfit, ideal for a business meeting or brunch with friends.

A women’s trench coat has a unique ability to shift its style from casual to elevated and vice versa—depending on the base layers. If you pair it with a suit, like the Beige Brown two-piece featuring the Oversize suit blazer and the Wide-leg suit trousers, the trench coat on top automatically becomes sharp and put-together.

Trench with mini dress and loafers

Preppy girls, it's time to shine! A mini dress and loafers, styled with your go-to trench, make for a perfectly polished look. Proportions play a major role in this look—your trench should be sweeping-long to contrast with a mini hem. Yet, if you prefer to cover your legs, swap loafers for knee-high boots.

The Decorative stich dress by Lisa Yang works great with a classy beige coat or—with a black one for tonal styling. Boots are an obvious choice here, but how about going a bit preppy with a pair of Hereu’s Metallic-effect loafers?

Cropped trench with jeans

A cropped trench offers a sweeter vibe than other types of trench coats, like a traditional floor-length design, for instance. While you could go the easy route by wearing it with simple bottoms, such as jeans, it's also easy to dress up with an eye-catching skirt.

It may be tempting to style your cropped trench with straight-leg jeans, but hear us out. A bit of volume down below adds interest to the most timeless coat. Hence, we teamed the Short trench coat from Tiger of Sweden with the Relaxed baggy jeans from Citizens of Humanity in white denim.

Trench over a mini skirt

Experiment with a dark-colored trench to take your look from day to night. This ensemble is the definition of business on top, party on the bottom with boots, a textured miniskirt, and a white button-down. And mini doesn’t feel too revealing thanks to the trench’s length.

Our textured bottom is the Flared mini skirt by Lisa Yang, quite understated on its own, but it shines when styled correctly. Pair it with the Dart fold cotton shirt by Erika Cavallini for that work-ready top part, but remember to balance the combination with boots and a long trench.

Trench with tee and sneakers

One of the easiest ways to wear a trench coat is simply with a tee and sneakers—we always love basic white sneaks with straight-leg jeans for a casual feel. To make this trench jacket outfit feel more complete, add layers with accessories, a neutral knit over your shoulders, and a baseball cap. Your perfect transitional look for in-between seasons is here.

The Contrast-trim cotton t-shirt from Tiger of Sweden is that basic tee we are talking about—neutral and well-fit. As for the sneaks, check out the Textured-trim leather sneakers from Ghoud. Made of premium leather with a sleek design, this pair will suit not only trench outfits, but also almost any casual look.

Trench coat with jeans and boots

Want to wear a trench as casually as possible? Dress down your oversized trench coat with straight-leg jeans. Yes, we come back to this nostalgic pair after all. Add a bag and some layered jewelry—or a blazer underneath—to complete this street-style mix, perfect for a day at the mall or a weekend getaway.

Bonus points if your denim pair is cropped, such as the Straight cropped jeans from Agolde. Add boots that feel comfy, but let us suggest the Ankle leather boots from Voile Blanche if you are ready to compromise neither style nor comfort.

Trench coat over a midi dress

A utilitarian trench can also help ground more daring styles. Make your trench coat sexy by pairing it with a bodycon dress, then add dazzling pointed pumps and a leather handbag for date night. Yep, when we said that trench suits every occasion, it wasn’t an exaggeration—it's truly versatile when styled properly.

To inspire your date-night mood, we recommend the Cross-neck ribbed dress by Erika Cavallini—simple yet so flattering! Pair it with Hereu’s iconic Cut-out leather bag and finish the look with a trench. Actually, if you are up for a bold style, like a leather coat, go for it—this is the perfect occasion to stun.

Trench with athleisure

Trench coats have the inexplicable ability to make even the most casual outfits feel distinctly elevated. Feel free to test our point with track pants, sweats, or even leggings—just add loafers or boots and a little bit of glitz. Shiny accessories, a glamorous bag, a bit of rhinestones here and there can do the trick.

Now, let’s see how to wear a trench coat with athletic staples. First of all, try something a bit more elevated, such as the High-waist tapered sweatpants from Aeronautica Militare. Don’t wear your home pair of pants and your beloved hoodie from 2010. Then, team it with the sleek shoes—the Leather Chelsea boots from Voile Blanche fit perfectly, yet you can always choose trainers instead.

Trench with black jeans

We’ve tried white baggy and blue straight, but how about a black denim pair with a trench? Honestly, it is hard to name something more versatile. Black jeans—could be straight, wide-leg, or even skinny—shift attention entirely to the coat, so if you planned to wear a standout piece, you are welcome to do so. By the way, denim trenches also exist, and they look amazing. Just saying.

For our long coat outfit, we combined the Racer top from FTC Cashmere and Agolde’s High-rise straight jeans. Cinch the waist with a leather belt, add statement jewelry and a pair of kitten-heeled black boots to shine in a quiet way.

Trench with a maxi skirt

A basic straight maxi is full of potential! Pair it with a long trench, and the look becomes modern and runway-ready. Pair it with a short trench coat, and something playful appears, along with mixed proportions and contrasting shapes. Play around and find your personal take on this pairing.

We styled the black Tailored maxi skirt from Beige Brown with the Fine-knit V-neck top by Lisa Yang in a lovely pastel shade. And there is nothing better than a cropped trench in a dark hue to complete this look. However, you do you—a long coat also works great.

Belted trench

Some trenches feature a belt in their original design, but if not—add a little oomph with a leather double-wrap belt to break up all that monolithic khaki energy. While leather always fits, the fabric styles might feel a bit cheap if they are not an original part of the trench. Choose your belt with caution—the more minimal, the better.

Our belt choice is the Double-wrap leather belt from Tiger of Sweden—premium black leather with a unique design. If you choose to cinch your beige coat with a leather belt, match it with other accessories, such as a bag and your shoes. We suggest the Flat square crossbody bag from Hereu to match our stylish belt.
