Butter Yellow Color Is the New Neutral
SummerWRITTEN BY KATERYNA LAKOMOVA

Butter Yellow Color Is the New Neutral

In recent seasons, the fashion landscape has been flooded with countless shades of beige—with trending styles like "quiet luxury" and "old money," many of us have been urged to shy away from vibrant colors. But what if there’s a fresh shade on the horizon that ticks all those boxes while also bringing a modern twist for the spring-summer season? Meet butter yellow. This hue is poised to claim the title of minimalist color, with fashion enthusiasts everywhere sporting it and showcasing just how elegantly butter yellow clothing can serve as a new neutral. This pale yellow color, delicate and flattering, is easy to mix with other shades, as it fits where the beige did. If bold shades make you uneasy, this hue could be just what you’re looking for.

Wondering what colors go with yellow clothes and how to style this hue? Start with lighter shades. A super-light buttery yellow is much easier to incorporate into your wardrobe than bolder tones. Combine it with your neutrals—creams, whites, and light denim. Alternatively, chocolate browns, navy, and black can create a lovely contrast when styled together. Choose minimalist pieces and avoid anything too elaborate or sugary.

Now, let’s dive into fashion-forward butter yellow outfit ideas—from striking head-to-toe ensembles to subtle accents.

With another neutral

Let’s start soft. Butter yellow and another neutral are a dreamy duo. Pairing butter yellow tops with white feels like sunshine spilled over fresh cream—elegant and zero stress. If you’re not in the mood to color-clash, stick to this pale, milky palette. Creams, vanillas, soft whites—they all let yellow glow—you’ll look polished, but not like you tried too hard.

We paired two fine knits by Lisa Yang—the Relaxed-fit cashmere top and the Fine-knit midi skirt. If that feels too simple for you, try layering more knits on top or under the tee. Maybe another neutral?

As outerwear

Wearing butter yellow as outerwear? Feels bold, but actually, it’s kind of the chillest move ever. Think of it as camel’s slightly sunnier cousin. It doesn’t shout for attention—just makes you shine while you do your thing. Throw it over denim or leather, and you’ve got that basic but trendy look—confident and understated. Honestly, pale yellow clothes feel more like a mood than a color choice.

The Oversize doublé coat over the Straight-fit leather trousers from House of Dagmar, and you’ve got a perfect transitional outfit for the upcoming weather shift.

With brown

Oh yes, this pairing makes so much sense—they both have warm and soft undertones. The contrast is present, but it feels natural, like butter and toast, you know. Keep your base light—pale yellow top, cream pants—and layer a brown jacket on top. Or add brown accents—loafers, a belt, something small. It’s subtle, it’s smart, and once you wear it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t style such a spring yellow outfit sooner.

For the base, we styled the Asymmetric ribbed top by Erika Cavallini with the Straight-leg jeans from Beige Brown. On top—the Oversize wool shirt jacket from House of Dagmar. Everyday errands or a brunch with friends? This look is your stylish upgrade for casual occasions.

As a hero piece

A butter yellow dress on its own is totally okay. More than okay—it is encouraged. Forget about the unnecessary styling fuss—relax and enjoy your look. Throw on a sandal or a sneaker, maybe one calm accessory if you're feeling generous. That’s it. The dress carries the energy—soft but confident, like it’s the main character. And it truly is.

The Side-slit maxi dress by Lisa Yang is our pick for this look—fine knit, simple design, premium quality. Team it with the Asymmetrical woven sandals from Hereu to keep the combo minimalist but with a hint of luxe.

With black

While the combination of black and pastel yellow might initially evoke images of buzzing insects, this muted tone allows you to style it just like cream, ivory, or white. To infuse a bit of sunshine into your office attire, pair a wide-leg butter yellow trouser with a black blazer. Or—vice versa. The butter-yellow top with a black bottom would do the trick quite well, too.

Let’s enhance the basic black A-lined silk skirt with the Pointelle knit top from House of Dagmar. The contrast is evident not only in hues but also in textures.

With denim

What color goes with butter yellow as if they were made to be together? Blue. For those who simply want to dip a toe into the dish, the safest way to get the look is by pairing a butter yellow jumper with your fave denim jeans or a jacket. Opt for a light summer knit or a statement top if you feel bolder. Blue and yellow outfits are a match made in heaven.

Try the Fine-knit longsleeve top from Erika Cavallini, for example, with Agolde’s Oversized vintage denim jacket. Finish the look with a pair of jeans, a denim maxi, or perhaps light blue Bermudas?

Head to toe

We wholeheartedly support the idea of embracing a color trend from head to toe. This season, going all out in a buttery hue for wedding receptions or birthday dinners is a definite win. For super special occasions, enhance the look with fringes, sequins, or—laces. Imagine a butter-yellow pants outfit with a laced top in the same hue—such a beautiful trend!

Meet the matching set from House of Dagmar, featuring the Rouched V-neck top and the Drawstring trousers. Head-to-toe means tonal dressing, so try to pick accessories and footwear in the same tone.

As a layering piece

Wardrobe essentials, such as a classic button-up shirt, are perfect for experimenting with new color trends. You likely have several pairs of blue jeans and eye-catching blazers to transition into spring with just a few adjustments. That check blazer will look fresh when paired with a buttercream yellow shirt. Try it out, you won’t regret, we promise.

Start with the High-rise stovepipe jeans from Citizens of Humanity—a base that is easy to dress up or down. Add the Oversize flowy shirt from House of Dagmar and finish it off with the Houndstooth single-breasted blazer from Beige Brown

With matching accessories

If you’re into details—and we know you are—match your butter yellow with accessories that speak the same language—ivory, vanilla, beige. A bag, a cap, jewelry—we build a quiet little universe where everything feels like a part of a bigger picture. This harmony is subtle—but it’s also personal. So play around, mix tones, and create soft summer outfits that feel like you.

As a foundation, we recommend the House of Dagmar pieces, like the Linen strap top and the Tailored shorts. As for the accessories, we added Hereu’s Flat square crossbody bag, but if you need something more spacious, try a tote or a small backpack.
