Modern Ways to Wear a Utility Jacket

Modern Ways to Wear a Utility Jacket

As we anticipate spring's arrival, we’re excited to ditch our bulky puffers and wool layers (finally). It’s such a pleasure to swap them for a light jacket that complements and highlights rather than hides away our style in endless layers of warmth! This season, we’re ready for a few fresh styles straight off the runway. And topping our list of spring outerwear trends, alongside bombers, sporty anoraks, and trenches, is the versatile women’s utility jacket.

So, what is a field and utility jacket? It’s a practical, casual outerwear piece known for its multiple pockets, durable fabric, and often military-inspired design. Once a simple workwear item, now transformed by many renowned brands. Straddling the line between a barn coat and a more tailored safari style, the utility jacket embodies relaxed toughness. Whether crafted from nylon, cotton, or leather, we’re drawn to styles that cinch at the waist and feature cargo pockets.

Whether you choose to pair it with denim or wear it as a contrasting layer over a feminine dress, the women’s field jacket will surely become a staple in your spring capsule. Read on to discover how to style a jacket and fully embrace the utility trend this year!

Utilitarian prep

Who said preppy and utilitarian don’t mix? Turns out, a black field jacket and loafers play surprisingly well together—especially when paired with ecru denim for a fresher twist. You could go with a classic khaki jacket and black jeans, but the light base gives it a clean, current vibe.

The field and utility jacket styling is easier than it seems. Take the Straight-leg jeans from Beige Brown, pair them with Hereu’s Lace-up loafers, and cover it all with the Field cotton jacket from House of Dagmar. Bonus points for a polo or a button-down under a jacket.

Utility jacket with tailoring

Replace your denim with tailored trousers to elevate your ensemble. For a harmonious balance, embrace the sporty vibe of the jacket—a drop-sleeve field jacket can be a great choice. We adore the combination of a boxy outer layered over a sleek top tucked neatly into high-waisted trousers. Pairing this look with pointed flats sharpens the overall combo and gives it a deliberate feel. Don’t forget to add luxe accessories to introduce a delightful contrast.

The Wide suit trousers from House of Dagmar are our pair of choice for this fashion-forward dressing. Throw the utility on top and finish the look with Hereu’s Plaited-handle crossbody bag for that elegant point.

Field jacket goes business casual

A green jacket is a classic twist on this season's trend. As modern women navigate their increasingly busy lives, utilitarian fashion has never been more relevant. Layer this versatile piece over a business-casual outfit, and you’ll be all set to transition from the office to after-work drinks.

We recommend neutral essentials from Beige Brown, such as the Patch-pocket striped shirt and the Tailored maxi skirt. Versatile and quiet, this mix works well in the office as it is, and can be styled for evening outings with a utility jacket.

Utility jacket over a dress

If your style tends toward the delicate or floral, you can definitely find a field jacket that matches your aesthetic. Pair a green jacket with a slip skirt or dress and some ballet flats for an unexpected look. This combination blends dressy and casual—sort of feminine and masculine vibes—perfectly. Alternatively, opt for a chunky boot to amp up the contrast.

Try the Square-neck linen flared midi dress from 120% Lino under a khaki or green field jacket, or go tonal and choose a beige one to match the dress. Here, you can choose accessories according to your needs—a crossbody for a short walk, a tote for when you need more space. We suggest the Canvas tote bag from Hereu, as it is voluminous to pack all your belongings, and—matches the mood of the dress.

Field jacket with jeans

Denim is likely the most straightforward choice to pair with a green jacket, but don’t underestimate this combination. Fashion experts and stylists often recommend teaming a green jacket with light denim, a white tee, and sneakers for an everyday look—perfect for going to class, running errands, or hanging out. If your jacket features a classic silhouette, opt for more contemporary shapes in your pants—wide-legs, cargos, or even bootcut.

We styled a traditional utility design—the Field cotton jacket from House of Dagmar. And because it is so classy, our jean pair features a unique and modern style, just check the Loose-fit straight jeans and see for yourself.

Monochrome chic

When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a tonal base outfit. A khaki field jacket pairs perfectly with monochrome looks, while an all-black ensemble makes the jacket feel purposeful rather than costume-like—so team it with black trousers and a black knit. To complete the outfit, add matching kitten heels and a belt. Go all-in on a brighter color like camel, and if you're really feeling fancy, go with head-to-toe green.

We’ll make the look total khaki by pairing the Cotton chino trousers with the Contrast stitch top from House of Dagmar. The hues may vary—from darker to lighter—that will add dimension, but the main tone should remain the same.

Field jacket with total white

An all-white base—jeans & top—makes any field jacket feel special. But a whole white-on-white utility look? That’s quiet luxury. It’s not your dog-walking outfit (unless you’re being papped), but perfect for dates, gallery days, or just dressing like you own a vineyard. Keep proportions relaxed, let the jacket do the talking, and avoid the grass if you can.

The Wide straight jeans from Citizens of Humanity are our starting point. Combine them with the Highneck sleeveless top from FTC Cashmere for a pristine base. For this particular combo, try an oversized utility jacket over your shoulders to maintain a lovely balance. Or—go for a cropped white jacket if you feel bolder.

Utility jacket with shorts

What is a utility jacket? A transitional lifesaver. A trustworthy companion that shows up when it’s 16°C and confusing outside. Throw it over a hoodie, pair with shorts, match your sneakers if you’re feeling coordinated. A loose knit underneath should be breathable and not too serious—just like the utility style itself.

Start with the shorts as they set up the tone. We styled Agolde’s Loose shorts with the Short-sleeve cashmere hoodie from FTC in a lovely olive shade. The Suede low-top sneakers from Voile Blanche match the shade of the hoodie and potentially—of your green field jacket.
