How to Style Tank Tops: Fashion Tips for Everyday Wear
WRITTEN BY KATERYNA LAKOMOVA
Your summer capsule wardrobe cannot consist only of eye-catching statement pieces—jelly sandals, boho blouses, airy pants, and linen skirts. While those are certainly fun to include, don't overlook the versatility of different styles of tank tops. Recently, tanks have made a comeback on the runway, with high-end brands featuring logo-emblazoned styles that have turned the best summer tanks into certified cult classics both on runways and streets. Plus, there are countless ways how to style tank tops.
So, what is a tank top? These sleeveless garments gained popularity in Western fashion during the early 20th century, initially as part of swimsuits for both men and women. These early designs featured a low-cut, sleeveless top that covered the torso, earning the name "tank top" from the term "tank suits," which referred to swimming pools as "tanks" in England. Today, a tank top is simply a sleeveless or shoulder-baring top.
Now, let's explore how to wear a tank top and create some chic tank top outfit ideas!
With Suit
It might seem that a suit wouldn't pair well with a casual staple like a tank top, but there's no better combination if you aim for an aesthetic tank top outfit. Opt for color blocking in this ensemble, such as a classic black suit and a crisp white tank top. To maintain a sleek and smart casual vibe, add knitted vests without any extra embellishments.
For our suit with tank top look, we chose a black suit from Beige Brown, featuring the Oversized suit blazer teamed with Wide-leg suit trousers. Beneath it, we layered a clean, pure white Logo-embroidered ribbed top.

With Wide-Leg Trousers
How to style vest top to create a polished ensemble? Pair a tank top with wide-leg tailored trousers! Accessorize with a statement necklace or a stylish scarf to add a trendy touch, and complete your outfit with sunglasses and a shoulder bag.
With so many tank top styles available, how do you choose the right one to complement your tailored pants? Look for flattering tank tops that fit snugly, feel breathable, and resemble a second skin. The Fine Knit Ribbed Top Kyle Camisole by Lisa Yang is a great choice. Team it with the Wide Suit Trousers from House of Dagmar, and add the red Printed Scarf from Aeronautica Militare to infuse that chic element into your ensemble.
With Denim Skirt
There's no pairing quite like a tank vest and a denim skirt, a timeless combination that works wonders in summer. This effortless duo creates a laid-back look that stands the test of time.
We've styled the iconic Reworked maxi skirt CIRCOLO from Citizens of Humanity alongside the Contrast stitch top from House of Dagmar. The black tank top features a decorative stitch along the edges, making it the perfect match for the Woven slingback sandals BARANA from Hereu.
With Maxi Skirt
A maxi skirt instantly creates an intriguing silhouette and adds a touch of elegance to otherwise casual racer tops. For this look, opt for snug-fitting, ribbed summer tanks in neutral shades to balance the ensemble.
We styled the ivory Racer top from FTC Cashmere with the black Maxi skirt from Beige Brown, completing the outfit with the Slim leather belt GEOMETIA from Tiger of Sweden. Let your sleeveless tank vest serve as the foundation of the look, which can be elevated with a statement blazer if you choose. If you lean towards bolder low-cut racer tops, keep the rest of the outfit understated.

With Shorts
Tailored shorts make a strong impression, so if you haven't picked up a pair yet, now's the perfect time. For inspiration, we styled our tank top and shorts outfit with an unbuttoned shirt.
Among the various types of tank tops, we picked the Asymmetric Ribbed Top by Erika Cavallini. This piece offers more than just your basic tank top; its asymmetrical shoulder strap adds a unique touch. We paired it with the Tailored Shorts from House of Dagmar in a coordinating color and layered the Patch-Pocket Striped Shirt from Beige Brown on top. Leave the shirt unbuttoned, and consider cinching the waist with a slim belt for an added dash of style.
With Cardigan
While sleeveless tops and jeans can stand out on their own, there are times when it's just too chilly to rock a ribbed tank top without some layering. So, what to wear over a tank top? A cardigan is a timeless choice that will always be in style, especially during those transitional seasons. It's ideal for when you want to stay warm without feeling weighed down or overheated.
For this look, we paired the Rib-knit cashmere top from FTC with a pair of grey Relaxed baggy jeans AYLA from Citizens of Humanity and topped it off with a beige Textured roundneck cardigan.
With Jeans
A tank top and jeans outfit is the ultimate go-to combo for a quick and stylish exit. A cotton tank top serves as a versatile staple that can be worn alone or layered for added flair. Elevate your look with heels, a chic shoulder bag, and a statement necklace. On those cooler days when a cardigan isn't quite enough, layer a coat on top for extra warmth.
We paired the Criss Cross upsized jeans from Agolde in a light blue wash with the Logo-embroidered ribbed top from Beige Brown. To complete the outfit, we threw on the Oversized doublé coat from House of Dagmar, adding a stylish volume over the white tank vest.

With a Matching Set
And what about those summer tanks? How to style them to stay comfortable in the scorching heat? One great option is to pair a shirt over the tank top with a breezy bottom. A vibrant matching set made from linen, lightweight cotton, or another natural fabric would be ideal.
For example, we styled a bright yellow linen set from Beige Brown—featuring an Oversized linen shirt and Elasticated-waist linen shorts—over a Logo-embroidered ribbed tank. For summer looks, we suggest a cotton tank vest for all your looks.
Styling tips
- Accessorize with confidence: Tank tops are basic staples, usually available in solid colors, which makes them a perfect backdrop for showcasing your accessories. One of the simplest ways to create a flattering tank top outfit is by layering on a few stacked chains or adding a striking neck scarf.
- Master the art of layering: Tanks are perfect for creating stylish layers. For a casual chic vibe, team an oversized button-up or a boxy denim jacket with a solid neutral tank. To add an edgy twist, throw on an oversized blazer or a leather jacket over your top.
- Athleisure time: Tank tops are a perfect fit for an athleisure look. Team a simple tank with leggings or sweatpants, throw on a cap, and finish the outfit with your favorite sneaks for an effortlessly casual vibe.
- Balance: A great way to achieve a balanced outfit is by pairing a snug tank top with a flowy maxi skirt or wide-leg jeans. Alternatively, team a fitted tank with skinny jeans or slim pants and throw on an oversized layer for a perfect balance.
